There has been much controversy about Jesus over the course of time, even before his birth due to the fact that He is the Son of God. Despite the fact that Jesus is the Son of God, there are many who believe that Jesus Christ, the Messiah, is no less or no greater than any other prophet ever mentioned in the Bible or that ever lived. Despite the idea that Jesus Christ is just a prophet as every other prophet, this idea is debunked by many verses from beginning to end in the Bible, but we will focus on the Gospel of John, who is called the beloved disciple of Jesus Christ.
Below is the evidence out of the Gospel of John that proves that Jesus is more than “just a prophet”. All texts are taken from the Amplified Bible. Take note that the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John provide similar history of Jesus and of most importance is the eyewitness accounts. Eyewitness accounts are used on a daily basis in courts of law around the world as proof in any incident or case. Historians also use the eyewitness documentation/notes for history outside of the Bible, archeologists etc, therefore, all is very credible. For this case, though only focusing on the Gospel of John, there are a multitude of other witnesses of Jesus and Who He is throughout the Bible.
On that note and as an example of other witnesses is Luke who was a physician and actually writes as a doctor would in the Gospel of Luke. From the very beginning, Luke explains this eyewitness matter, possibly being a man who as a physician bases much of what he knows off of details seen and factual – not imaginary and non existent. Below is just a quick glance at the intro to the Gospel of Luke and then on to the Gospel of John.
Luke 1:1-4
1SINCE as is well known] many have undertaken to put in order and draw up a [thorough] narrative of the surely established deeds which have been accomplished and fulfilled in and among us,
2Exactly as they were handed down to us by those who from the official] beginning [of Jesus' ministry] were eyewitnesses and ministers of the Word [that is, of the doctrine concerning the attainment through Christ of salvation in the kingdom of God],
3It seemed good and desirable to me, [and so I have determined] also after having searched out diligently and followed all things closely and traced accurately the course from the highest to the minutest detail from the very first, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,
4[My purpose is] that you may know the full truth and understand with certainty and security against error the accounts (histories) and doctrines of the faith of which you have been informed and in which you have been orally instructed.
John 1:1-2
1IN THE beginning [before all time] was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself.
2He was present originally with God.
In the verse of scripture above taken from chapter 1 of the Gospel of John, it is evident that Jesus himself, or the Word of God, was with God from the very beginning. Reading on beyond this verse 2 one will find that the Word became flesh and lived among us all. These particular facts – Jesus being with God in the very beginning and that Jesus is the Word made flesh – are only the beginnings of several proofs that make Jesus more than just like any other prophet.
John 1:29-34
29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ 31I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”
32Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God.”
For back story’s sake, John the Baptist is the one prophet who was baptizing and preparing everyone for the coming of Jesus Christ who would
baptize in the Holy Spirit, not just with water. God sent John the Baptist as a prophet to prepare the way of the LORD. The only way that John would be able to recognize Jesus as the sent Son of God would be when the Spirit descends on Jesus as a dove before the very eyes of John the Baptist. This is an eyewitness account, and again, John the Baptist is a prophet who would not lie about this sort of thing. Actually of the prophets, John the Baptist is the greatest with great reputation as such, so much so that people feared what they should or should not say about him. Again, John the Baptist later talks of decreasing and Jesus increase because Jesus is greater than him. Jesus is directly from heaven, and baptizes with the Holy Spirit that seals for eternal life.
This no other prophet can do nor will do – give eternal life. And then, of course, the identification of Jesus by the Holy Spirit as a dove is the ID. No other prophet was identified as Jesus is in this manner.
John 3:16
16For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.
Jesus is the Son of God. God gave his only Son for those who believe in and on him to see eternal death, but only eternal life. No other prophet alive or dead, could, can, nor will have everyone’s eternal life in his hands. Only through Jesus can one see eternal life and not eternal death.
John 3:34
34For since He Whom God has sent speaks the words of God [proclaims God's own message], God does not give Him His Spirit sparingly or by measure, but boundless is the gift God makes of His Spirit!
All the other prophets in the Bible had a measured gift of God’s Spirit, however, with Jesus, there was no measure. Jesus was given ALL of God’s Spirit, boundless. This is one of the main things that sets Jesus apart as the Son of God and extremely different than any other prophet because Jesus is more than just a prophet.
John 3:36
36And he who believes in (has faith in, clings to, relies on) the Son has (now possesses) eternal life. But whoever disobeys (is unbelieving toward, refuses to trust in, disregards, is not subject to) the Son will never see (experience) life, but [instead] the wrath of God abides on him. [God's displeasure remains on him; His indignation hangs over him continually.]
This is another scripture that states the power Jesus has of eternal life for those who believe on him. No other prophet ever could grant eternal life to anyone through that individual having faith in, or relying on him. Eternal life is granted from God, and God gives all that boundless power to Jesus Who was always with God from the beginning.
John 4:14
14But whoever takes a drink of the water that I will give him shall never, no never, be thirsty any more. But the water that I will give him shall become a spring of water welling up (flowing, bubbling) [continually] within him unto (into, for) eternal life.
AND
John 4:26
25The woman said to Him, I know that Messiah is coming, He Who is called the Christ (the Anointed One); and when He arrives, He will tell us everything we need to know and make it clear to us.
26Jesus said to her, I Who now speak with you am He.
In both these verses of the fourth chapter of John, Jesus is talking to a Samaritan woman, and in each verse, Jesus speaks something very significant. In verse 24, Jesus states that he is the way or the waters of eternal life. In the next verses, the Samaritan lady responds of the prophecy that the Messiah is coming to tell all what needs to be known. Jesus responds with a positive affirmation that He is that Messiah.
With a thorough review of any true prophet, they speak truth and not lies, directly from God. This isn’t only a truth coming from a mere man, but this is the ultimate confession that Jesus makes from his lips that it is He. This can’t be a lie as Jesus is recorded as a man with absolutely no sin.
John 5:18
18This made the Jews more determined than ever to kill Him [to do away with Him]; because He not only was breaking (weakening, violating) the Sabbath, but He actually was speaking of God as being [in a special sense] His own Father, making Himself equal [putting Himself on a level] with God.
In this above verse, the Jews became upset that Jesus made himself equal to God by referencing God as Father. This was, to them blasphemy as they couldn’t swallow such a thing, thus they wanted Him dead. The Jews were also upset that Jesus healed someone on the Sabbath which was forbidden. No other prophet has ever taken the title as Son of God, Messiah because they simply weren’t.
John 5:26
26For even as the Father has life in Himself and is self-existent, so He has given to the Son to have life in Himself and be self-existent.
This is self explanatory. Jesus is self existent just as the Father, unlike any other prophet.
In conclusion, there are countless other proofs of Jesus is more than just a prophet, but these just in the Gospel of John pretty much set Jesus apart and above any other prophet that ever walked the earth. Jesus is the Son of God, the Messiah.
Will continue this post later with more verses of scripture outside of the Gospel of John…
