Former President Of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo Under Fire For Use Of Jesus Christ Name In Vain

by admin

Christians are only authorized to use the Name of Jesus Christ in certain specific situations, and one of those situations isn’t to use the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ for nothing or in vain.  This is exactly what the former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, is catching the heat for doing by the President of God’s Kingdom Society, Church of the Living God, Emmanuel Aighalua, according to AllAfrica.

President Olusegun Obasanjo

According to the report, the former president’s words struck a nerve because he placed the high Name of Jesus Christ in a carnal fashion with this quote:

‘that even if Jesus Christ conducted elections in Nigeria, the results would still be disputed,’

It is cut and dry what the former president Olusegun Obasanjo was trying to say – that no matter what, elections will be disputed in Nigeria, no matter how perfect.  The perfection chimes in with the use of the Savior of the world, Jesus Christ.  Why did he say that!  All mess broke loose, and now, Brother Emmanuel Aighalua is wanting Obasonjo to take back his statement as it is blatantly blasphemous.  More on what Aighalua has to say about the matter and usage of Jesus Christ name follows call coming from AllAfrica.com for further reading into the story.

“He should have just said so without dragging into it the name of Jesus Christ, whom he claims to believe in as the Saviour of the world” the Church leader said, quoting the words of St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 2: 13 that we should “compare spiritual things with spiritual”.

“Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man”. (Colossians 4:6) Also, in Ephesians 4:29 the Apostle said: “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”

Apparently, these statements went to the core of Brother Emmanuel, and there is no turning back.

Loose language.  We all tend to forget that what we say and do are the things that we will be held accountable for in the days of judgment.  Yes, sure, there are many who believe that the president didn’t in any way defame the name of Jesus by using it in that context due to the fact that he was really only criticizing the election process, not the Savior.  As a matter of fact, there are even people who use Jesus Christ in the situation of dating such as ‘If you are looking for perfection in a man, Jesus Christ has already left the earth’.   Again in this case, one is clearly stating that perfection lies in Jesus.  On one hand, it is giving Jesus that just perfection due, but on the other hand, many will see this as vain and empty conversation.

In the case of the former president Obasanjo and Emmanuel Aighalua, at least they can agree on two things if they would – they both realize the perfection of Jesus Christ and the imperfection of man in both elections and the tongue.
